Energy Management in Small Buildings and Local Grids

The objective of SmartCoDe is to enable the application of Demand Side Management (DSM) and smart metering in private and small commercial buildings and neighbourhoods. This requires the development of new methods for automated energy management that specifically considers the requirements of Energy using Products (EuP) in homes / offices and local renewable energy providers.

For the concept of the SmartCoDe project, we consider a “local energy resource cluster” that consists of the following energy resources (consumers and producers):

  1. Locally available renewable energies, especially small-scale wind turbines and/or building-integrated photovoltaic's.
  2. Locally available energy storages such as car batteries (plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles).
  3. Energy using products such as HVAC, electric lighting, consumer electronics, white goods, etc.

In the paper we will describe hard- and software requirements to implement such an automated energy management system for costs which can be financed through the energy savings with payback times of a few years only. First experiences with the SmartCoDe local energy resource cluster which contains all of the requested energy resources will be reported.

Features which allow new services to generate added values will be explained too.
